Stress Overload

Because I think I have too much on my hand right now.

Putting up that small food business (even how small it is) is eating up a lot of our time and energy. Not that I am complaining because I know we need to do that but my body is already giving up.

This year, I’ve pushed myself so far, beyond its limit I guess and now I need to stop and rest and recuperate.

I had my CBC (Complete Blood Count) done last Friday because I’ve been feeling so weak , I know something is wrong- and knowing that I have history of severe anemia, I had to do that test. Got the result yesterday and I was right, everything looks bad (though I have yet to consult a doctor-to which I am always postponing because of schedules and money concerns..sigh )

My RBC (Red Blood cells) significantly went down, as well as my hemoglobin and hematocrit. My WBC (White blood cells) is quite high which is also very unusual.

I know I have to do something about this because I need energy to do all the things that I do. You know, I say this often “I can’t get sick” but to not get sick I need to rest and take care of myself better. But how oh how can I rest? Even my weekends are not free anymore :(

Sleeping better

Because we are trying to change our eating habits for health reasons, I have also change my sleeping pattern. Maybe because of the one glass of milk every evening (in replacement of one cup of coffee every after dinner) I can no longer stay awake till past midnight, before, I can be up till two in the morning.

So that's a good news. Now I get to enjoy the comfort of our bed which I think needs the best latex foam topper already butof course that is not a priority.

For now, am satisfied with all the changes because it is all for the better. We are still adjusting and it is not easy but with the good results I will carry on :)

Sleep Deprived

I admit, the most hours of sleep I get regularly is less than six hours. Worst day pa nga three or four hours only. Normal should be at least seven or eight. I really should work on my sleeping pattern or else I'll forever suffer the side effects of sleep deprivation. Weight Gain, mood swings, higher stress levels are just some of them. Sigh.

I read this article this morning, thus this post; I promise. I would really work on this sooner.

~*~

The 10 Weirdest Side Effects of Sleep Deprivation
By Jane Bianchi

Be honest: How many hours did you sleep last night? If you're like 35% of Americans, then you probably got fewer than seven hours-in other words, not enough! You already know that a lack of rest can lead to exhaustion, and you may have heard it can raise your risk for serious health problems, such as heart disease and type 2 diabetes, because it's associated with insulin resistance, inflammation and the thickening of blood vessels. But there are even more unexpected, negative consequences. Here, what to watch out for, and how to hit the hay earlier.

1. Weight Gain

"Sleep deprivation slows your metabolism and increases your appetite. It also makes you crave high-fat and high-carb foods," says Michael Breus, PhD, a psychologist and sleep disorder specialist in Scottsdale, AZ. One trick: Cut out that evening glass of wine (sorry!), because although alcohol makes you want to snooze, it actually disrupts sleep later in the night. Plus, slashing calories prevents your waistline from widening.

 2. Moodiness

When you're tired, you might notice a temporary change in your emotions-maybe a sappy commercial you've seen dozens of times suddenly makes you cry. If you're chronically tired, though, you may have a more serious condition. "Research shows that at least 50% of people with depression have some type of sleep problem-usually insomnia," says Lisa Shives, MD, an internist and sleep medicine expert in Evanston, IL, and the medical expert for SleepBetter.org. "Neurotransmitters involved in our sleep/wake cycle are linked to feel-good hormones, like serotonin." If you're feeling off-kilter, see a psychologist who's also a sleep specialist-that way, whether your moodiness is causing a sleep problem or vice versa, you can get help.

3. Swollen, Dark Undereye Circles

"
When you don't sleep, your body loses moisture, so your skin becomes dehydrated. This can lead to circles under your eyes," says Joel Schlessinger, MD, a dermatologist and cosmetic surgeon in Omaha, NE. Start a new bedtime ritual: First, drink a cup of chamomile tea an hour before you lie down. This herbal beverage doesn't contain caffeine, and it hydrates and relaxes you. Second, apply facial moisturizer and eye cream, which stops your skin from drying out.

4. Problems Driving

Fatigue causes one in five car crashes, according to an April 2013 study from Virginia Tech Transportation Institute. How come? Driving drowsy slows reaction time, decreases awareness and damages judgment. In fact, one Australian study found that being up for 24 hours is equivalent, in terms of driving impairment, to having a blood alcohol content of .10 (.08 is legally drunk). If you'll be driving a long distance tomorrow, have an 8-oz glass of tart cherry juice an hour-and-a-half before bed tonight. The drink contains melatonin, and has been shown to help people sleep 39 minutes longer per night.

5. Higher Stress Levels

Getting fewer than six hours of sleep per night disrupts the genes that regulate stress, according to a February 2013 study from the University of Surrey in Guildford, England. And that means you're likely to feel more anxious. Try de-stressing before bed each night so you can fall asleep faster. First, do five minutes of meditation by breathing deeply in a seated position with your eyes closed. Then, do five minutes of your favorite relaxing stretches or yoga moves, such as child's pose, legs up the wall or happy baby.

6. Lower Body Temperature

You might get the chills when you don't get enough zzz's. "Your body temperature falls to its lowest point in the middle of the night while you sleep. So if you're under-slept, your body temperature might be trying to drop," says Dr. Shives. When you're going to sleep, the National Sleep Foundation suggests keeping your bedroom cool-between 54 and 75°F-because a hot environment may cause disrupted or lighter sleep.

7. Brain Fog

Do you find that it's harder to think after a night of poor sleep, especially when you're on the job? "That's because sleep deprivation negatively affects your ability to learn and remember new information," says Janet Kennedy, PhD, a clinical psychologist and sleep specialist in New York City. Having a cup of caffeinated coffee in the morning helps you stay alert, but also try these two tips. First, go to bed at the exact same time each night and wake up at the exact same time each morning-even on weekends. Second, spend at least a few minutes in daylight in the A.M. Both strategies get your circadian rhythm on track.

8. Marital Strife
People who are chronically tired tend to be less interested in sex. "Scientists know that people who don't sleep well are usually more stressed. And there's a link between high stress levels and low libido," says Dr. Shives. Plus, as mentioned, lack of sleep can lead to mood swings-and snapping at your husband or holing up in your room to cry doesn't bring the two of you closer. Make sure you schedule a date night, whether it's once a week or once a month, to reconnect with your man and strengthen your relationship. And if TV time is how you bond, avoid watching it (or using a computer) an hour before bed, as bright screens may over-stimulate you.

9. Lower Immunity

Feeling exhausted? You're more likely to get sick. "Scientists gave fully rested and sleep-deprived people vaccinations, and found that people who don't get seven to eight hours of sleep produce fewer antibodies in response. This shows that your immune system isn't as strong when you're tired," says Dr. Shives. If you haven't gotten a good night's sleep, stay away from anyone who's coughing and sneezing and eat nutritious, immunity-boosting foods. Also, try dimming your home's lights an hour before bed, which signals to your body that it's time to wind down.

10. More Difficult Workouts

You may still be able to lift heavy weights and run fast after not resting well. But because your sleep-deprived mind isn't so sharp and you're likely to be stressed and moody, the workout may feel harder than usual, according to Dr. Breus. Plus, feeling sleepy may deter you from exercising in the first place. To sleep more soundly (especially the night before a race or other athletic event), finish eating at least two to three hours before turning in. If you feel too full or experience heartburn in bed, you may have trouble falling asleep.

Was sick

My body, exhausted from all the incidents on the first weekend of November gave up on me this weekend. I was not able to come to office last Friday. I had fever and is coughing like there is no tomorrow. So I was forced to get some rest. I stayed whole day at the bed and slept like I haven't slept for months.

And that was a good decision, otherwise It could have been worse.

Water is my best friend these days and citrus fruits ( I avoided antibiotics and other meds)

I feel a lot better now though the cough and colds are still with me :(

But  I hope they'll go away soon.

The need to exercise

My father's health is giving us a lot of realization and discussion about our own health too. I am glad that for now, all he had to do is to watch what he eat, EXERCISE and take all his prescriptions.

I am so relieved.
And reminded.....

that we really need to take good care of our health.

that  exercise is a MUST and not an option. My father's doctor lectured him a lot about  this, the many benefits you can get and how it can help him big time with his condition alongside with the proper diet. That if he follow it, he might not need the medicines and could still live longer :)

And so last night..I walked....after such a long time of not doing any physical exercise I decided to get back to walking. I guess walking twenty minutes  every night is not bad at all. What do you think?

The heat is on

And I mean literally heat :(

I didn't monitor the temperature but I think it's been 34C and maybe higher these last few days, ceiling fans and coolers aren't enough to cool us, taking a bath twice or thrice a day isn't enough either.

That's how summer is here now and they said it can get worse.

And some rich guys are still cutting trees for their own benefit. Of course they don't feel the heat because they live in their 24/7 air conditioned world so why care?

There were also news of heat strokes and a lot are sick due to the very high temperature, thank God, both of us are being spared. We can not afford to get sick.

I feel like I'm gaining weight again..

I think I'm getting back some of the weight I lost these past few months..ugh..bad news. Probably because I re-introduced carbohydrates again in my diet and though I am doing it in moderation (like once a day) I don't know why I feel like I'm gaining weight again although I have yet to set a date with the weighing scale to confirm the weight gain.

Losing and maintaining weight makes me crazy at times :) But I am still not resorting to any weight loss pills like I did before and anyone who would want to do such should  read about the side effects of adipotrol or any diet pills for that matter and of course should consult their physician.

Anyways, I guess I really have to give up the rice completely and some of the carbohydrates except for my source of fiber and hopefully I'll not gain weight anymore.

Plaques for me!!!

You need to give me plaques of recognition..yes with s meaning not just one. Why? oh well, first is because I've confirmed that I lost weight (the weighing scale said so!) I know it is still a long way to go but it is better to do it slowly but surely right?

Second- I can't believe I can discipline myself when it comes to food but yay for me because it's been a while since I started the low carb diet and I'm doing good so far. Even with all the parties and events I had for he past week. I managed to stay away from pastas and rice :)

Don't I deserve a hug? a clap or maybe a standing ovation? okay..that's over acting I know and I'm just kidding...

Anyways, as I have said, it's still a long long way to go and I hope to keep up the discipline until my next weight in :)

How to treat mouth sores?

Or "singaw" in Filipino language?

Because currently I have like three inside my mouth and it's annoying not to mention painful. I can't even properly chew my food. And I noticed that I've been getting these mouth sores too often. That made me typed in google search page "mouth sores causes and treatment".

And from what I read, here's what I suspect that causes mine.

1. Anxiety or stress
2. Iron, folic acid, or vitamin B12 deficiency
3. Changes in hormone levels

I know it's nothing serious and I'm sure it will  get better in time but I will still try these treatments just so I can be relieved and eat properly :)

1. I will avoid hot and spicy food
2. Will gargle warm water with salt
3. "Bactidol" might help or any antiseptic mouthwash
4. and oh..I should I avoid salty foods too.

Calories in a cup of rice

Here's another calorie counting post, forgive me but I've been reading a lot about nutrition facts and most likely I'll be posting about it from time to time.

Now, rice is a staple food for every Filipinos. We eat them from breakfast to dinner, and oh we eat more than a cup in every meal (aminin!!) So here's what you get in every cup of rice that you eat.

I cup of white rice, regular, long grain, cooked has :

Protein : 4.3
Carbohydrates : 44.5
Fat : 0.4
Calories : 205. 4

So if you eat 2 cups for each meal : 410,  and since we eat 3 x a day that makes 1,230 calories just for the rice alone!!

Oh well, as long as you are burning those calories..go on! enjoy your cup of rice!

How many calories in banana?

For two weeks, it has been staple in my daily diet. Sometimes I eat more than two bananas in a day. So to make sure I am doing the right thing I ask how many calories is in a piece of banana and here's what I read;

An extra small banana ( up to six inches) has 75 calories while a small one (six and seven inches) has at least 90 calories. There are 105 calories in medium bananas (seven and eight inches in length)
Source : calories in banana

So I think having two or three extra small bananas in a day is okay if you'll only count the calories however you might want to check also the carb and the sugar because bananas is not included in the list of low carb fruit.

Oh sweet!

I know it's not healthy but who can resist that?? The white box is already empty and I just opened the next box :) Looks like it will all be gone tomorrow...

It's very seldom that I do crave and eat sweets but I guess I have the hormones to blame...

Want some?

Monday.Am Sick

It’s Monday, first day of the work week and I am absent. I don’t know why but had trouble sleeping last night, I’m coughing hard and when I woke up this morning, I had slight fever and my body seems sore. So there, I have no options but to inform the office I can’t go to work today. I know how my boss hates being absent especially on Monday but I have no choice.

So I’ll be staying home and will rest the whole day. Will probably finished the book I am currently reading but will check on bowfishing equipment also.

I hope you all have a very good Monday. It’s cold and cough season because of the weather so please be safe. It’s not fun being sick.

Biggest Loser: Pinoy Edition

I've been watching the show since it opened here last week. And sans the additional heavy drama (well, Filipinos love that) I surely would have liked it better.

I do watch the show because first, I am also on the heavy side although my weight is not as heavy as those of the contestants, second, I get inspired to move. I learn some exercises that I can do even at home. Their trainers are good, probably one of the best here. Chinggay Andrada looks so healthy! I assume they are not just graduate of personal trainer certification programs but is equipped with vast knowledge and experience as a trainer.

I can't wait to see the results of the very first Pinoy Edition of this show. I want to know how much weight they lost in four months and will the change be forever?

Meanwhile, I'll keep watching and hoping that I'll get inspired and do the same way. Lose weight and aim for healthier life!

Update on my diet

I'm reading abut sensa reviews now and made me realize how I failed on the second phase of my high protein low carb diet :( I only have my self to blame of course, I wanted to point finger about the many activities I had in the past weeks but I know there's no sense in doing that. The good news though is there is still no loads of carb in my plate compared to my carb intake before.

That's how our dinner table looks like when I was still on phase 1 ..No rice at all!! and I still want congratulate my self for lasting two weeks without rice. Tonight I'll try that again :)

Leg cramps

I think I need compression stockings nurses use, you know those stockings that gives relief from muscle pain due to standing all day or all night. Even before the wedding I've been experiencing leg cramps and it was bad to the point that the husband will find me crying in the middle of the night and it worsen after the long week of church activity and the wedding.

Although it feels better now because of the many ointments and massages I still feel I need to do something about it. Especially now that I'm off again for a three day church activity (YOUTH CAMP) tomorrow. Oh bless me! I hope I need not be standing all day long for three days :( And even if I was assigned to be in charge of the games I really wish I could find time to rest as well.

Have not really been resting even if it was holiday here because I went home to the province and it was a long 5 hour drive and when you're home with all your nieces and nephews you don't get much rest right?

Anyways, April will soon be over and I wish May will not be as crazy as this month.

10th day of low carb high protein diet

I am about to finish the first phase of the low carb diet (yay for me!) but nope because I cheated :( I ate pasta and some prohibited food  (small amount though) on the 4th and 6th day but  never had rice meal since day 1.

4 more days and I'm off to phase 2 and I can now re introduce carb into my diet but small amount only  and oh I can eat fruits now! that I miss so much.

Changes I noticed :
1. Am not craving for rice anymore,
2. I feel full till lunch time while before I need to eat rice for breakfast because if I don't eat rice I feel hungry even before lunch time.
3. I think I feel lighter (I do not know If I lost some pounds -I have yet to weigh my self but I hope I lost even 2 pounds for two weeks would be great for me, slowly but surely. :)

Wish me luck again!!

Day 2

of my low carb diet- I'm trying to do what I did before my wedding and I am hoping I'll be in my pre-wedding weight months from now, not for any thing but the main concern why I'm doing this is my health. I also would like to journal it here so someone can check and push me when I am failing :)

So yesterday was day 1 and here's what I had;

Breakfast -  boiled eggs /  hotdog
Lunch - fish / beef afritada
Snacks - Barbecue
Dinner - pork and egg

I also had green salad before the main dinner

I should not feel hungry while I'm doing this low carb diet so I'm eating a lot of proteins, I can't cheat on first three days ( said from the article I read) but I hope I won't cheat forever. I miss rice though :(

Today, at breakfast I had sausages and egg (again)
Lunch, vegetable soup, fish and a piece of chicken

Istill do not know what I will eat tonight for dinner but wish me luck because we're going to a friend's birthday dinner. I'm expecting a lot of foods and I hope I have something I can and allowed to eat there.

Goodbye for pastas and noodles and rice for now..but I'll see you in two weeks :) as I can re -introduce it again to my daily intake. And oh..the husband said I should do some physical exercise also while I'm on this.

American Idol. Head ache

I'm watching American Idol and I am having a terrible headache..not because of the idol contestants though, this headache has been punishing me since yesterday afternoon and he brought along another two friend to party with him (colds and cough) so they're  having some good time right now. I just hope they don't invite fever anymore because I can't afford that anymore.

And I don't even know why I am watching television while typing here, that doesn't help right?

I'll just wait for the Filipina contestant "Thia Megia" and will rest na. I need to shoo away these three visitors partying in me soon.
